“Most Innovative Powertrain System” powered by MTU

Category: FSC Award, Awards 2018

As a leading supplier of diesel engines and systems for marine propulsion and off-highway applications, MTU is particularly committed to setting the benchmark in powertrain design. Each time our engineers tackle the task of pushing technology’s limits in terms of power, precision, resilience, cost efficiency and emissions, passion and craftsmanship go hand in hand.

And that’s exactly where you come into play: Just like our 10,000-strong workforce each day transforms fascinating ideas into powerful technology, you are asked to come up with the most innovative powertrain solution. Whether it’s your engine, your transmission, your cooling system, your drive shaft or your whole powertrain system that stands out above the rest: Apply now for the MTU “Most Innovative Powertrain” Award and seize your opportunity of gaining immortal Formula Student fame – as well as winning 3.000 EUR in prize money.

Read below for further information on eligibility requirements, deadlines and technical details. And bear in mind: It’s not necessarily about the most costly materials or the most elaborate solution, but about ingenuity, outside-the-box thinking and a real passion for engineering. Because at MTU R&D division, you can certainly develop a great deal of things – except for a lack of energy, drive or power.

Technical Specifications

(1) What will be judged?

The power train is defined by the following system parts:

  • engine (complete with mounting)
  • inlet system complete
  • exhaust system complete
  • gear box with final drive (e. g. chain)
  • differential and drive shafts
  • cooling system
  • super charging (if existing)
  • electronic system/controlling
  • injection system
  • ignition system

Please describe your power train on one page, answering the following questions:

  • What is the overall concept idea behind your propulsion system?
  • Why did you choose this system approach?
  • What is your concept for physical and functional integration of your subsystems like e.g. engine, transmission, cooling system into a full vehicle system?
  • What is your most innovative power train solution? Please explain and give reasons why you chose this particular solution.
  • What were your objects for this solution?
  • What was your route to realize this solution?
  • Why do you think YOU should win this award?

Please submit your applications Monday July 23rd, 2018, 23:59 CEST at latest on the page “Team Deadlines” (=> MyTeam => Events => Deadlines). Your documents should not exceed 20 MB.

(2) Presentation

Among all participating teams, five will be nominated to stand up for their solution on Wednesday, August 8th, in the FSG Forum. If you’re among them, your team will get a maximum of 15 minutes to persuade the judges of the advantages of your particular powertrain design. You may either present your solution by means of a laptop presentation (beamer will be provided) or using your actual car and/or powertrain component. But please keep your efforts in terms of presentation technology as low as possible – enthuse us with your ideas! After the presentation, a discussion of max. 15 minutes will finalize the session.

We are looking forward to receiving your application and wish you all a safe journey to Hockenheim as well as good luck in the competition!

Yours,
Udo Sander
